Strings Attached: How Harvard’s Wealthiest Alumni Are Reshaping University Giving
A. E. French '29, former Worcester Academy football star and captain of the University team last fall, has been named head coach of the Freshman team for next year, it was announced yesterday by W. J. Bingham, '16, Director of Athletics. E. L. Casey '19, former mentor of Freshman football will coach the University backfield.
Coach Horween's staff next fall will include, beside French and Casey, R. J. Dunne, former Michigan star, and C. J. Hubbard '24, famous Harvard quarterback, who are to be in charge of the University linesmen again. The position of end coach for the University team is still open but will probably be filled in the near future.
J. T. Knox '98, who directed spring football practice during Horween's recent absence in Chicago, will as usual have charge of the Second University Team. The appointment of his assistants will be announced at a later date.
Outstanding as a preparatory school player of running and kicking ability far above the average, French was elected captain of his Freshman team at Harvard in 1925. Since then he has been for three years a conspicuous player in the backfield of the University team and as captain last fall he led the team to the first Harvard victory over Yale since 1922.
Casey was one of the most prominent gridiron performers of his day, and as Freshman coach, he has had an unusually successful career, having lost but one contest during his three years in that position. His teams have been consistently victorious over Yale, and his only defeat came at the hands of Andover in the first game of the 1926 season.
