Rumors current in several Boston newspapers yesterday to the effect that A. E. French '29, captain of last season's football team, would coach the Freshman gridiron players next fall, received neither confirmation nor denial from the Harvard authorities.
It has long been predicted by many sports followers that E. L. Casey '20, present mentor of the first-year eleven, may be transferred to the staff of coaches of the University team; and to fill his place, French is considered among the leading possibilities.
French declined last night to make any announcement on the situation, however, beyond admitting that he has received similar offers from several institutions. Arnold Horween '21, head Harvard coach, likewise was silent; his only statement was that "the coaching staff has not yet been selected." W. J. Bingham '16, director of athletics, could not be reached.
