The Crimson nine hung up its fifth win of the year, when it swamped the Springfield College team under a barrage of hits Saturday afternoon on Soldiers Field, winning by an 11 to 3 score. It was one of the most uninteresting and most sloppily played games seen here in several seasons, and, although the home team made just as many miscues as the gymnasts, the superior batting of the Harvard aggregation behind the masterful pitching of Howard Whitmore '29 gave them the verdict.
The Springfield offensive threatened several times in the early innings, only to be silenced by the right-hand slants of the Crimson ace. One run was earned off his delivery, that where, with two out. Wood's triple was followed by an infield roller which was turned into a safety.
Crimson Scores Two in First
Coach Mitchell shifted his batting order in the absence of B. H. Bassett '31 who incurred a slight injury in batting practice the day before, starting F. E. Nugent '29 in the leadoff position. He put B. H. Ticknor '31 in centerfield, when he learned that the gymnasts were starting their southpaw Lipp, but Ticknor continued in his batting slump, striking out three times. Nugent drew a walk in the first inning. E. H. McGrath '31 singled, and a passed ball which rolled into the Crimson dugout let them both in. A moment later when the catcher dropped his third strike. Ticknor saw first base for the first time since early in the Southern trip, but was stranded there.
The home team scored two more in the second on a single by T. W. Gilligan '31, a wild pitch, and two infield errors, Harvard clinched the game in the fourth when they scored three runs on four hits, one a triple by G. E. Donaghy '29. Gilligan's double in the next frame scored Ticknor, who had walked.
Lipp Batted Hard in Seventh
Five successive safeties in the seventh inning gave the Crimson forces three runs and an indisputable margin. Prior's triple, a beautiful drive to deep right, was the only extra base blow among them. Gilligan got his third hit of the day in this frame. The Crimson sluggers were retired in order in the eighth. McGrath and Donaghy lifted long flies to left, while Ticknor struck out.
