Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
The University nine hammered out five runs in the first three innings of yesterday's game to gain an easy 5 to 1 verdict over Bates College. Howard Whitmore '29 pitched no-hit ball for eight innings, only to weaken with one out in the ninth when three of the visiting batters found him for hits, one a triple, netting a lone tally.
The batting of E. H. McGrath '31, who got two singles and a triple, and G. E. Donaghy '29, who garnered a long home run and a single, each scoring men on bases, were outstanding. The individual fielding gem was contributed by S. L. Batch elder '31, who gathered in Cascaddis' foul fly close to the grandstand while running at full speed.
Harvard Scores Early
Harvard started its scoring early, aided by a high wind which seemed to trouble the visiting gardeners in judging files. B. H. Bassett '31, diminutive lead-off man, started the first inning with a Texas leaguer to short center. He stole second, was advanced to third by Donaghy's single, both scoring on J. A. Prior's hit to short left.
With two out in the third, McGrath tripled, crossing the plate a moment later when the Harvard captain poled one of Marston's fast balls to the Freshman diamond for a home run. A minute later Prior scored the last of the Crimson runs on a two base outfield error and a wild pitch. Three base hits--McGrath, Luce, Home run--Donaghy, Sacrifice hit--Turner. Stolen bases--Bassett, Donaghy, Gilligan. Struck out--by Whitmore 5, by Marston 3. Bases on balls--off Whitmore 3, off Marston 2. Umpires--Stafford and Halloran. Time of game--1 hour, 40 minutes.
