MITCHELL SLICES SQUAD IN HALF IN FINAL SELECTION

With the opening of the season only four days distant Coach F. G. Mitchell, veteran University baseball mentor, yesterday picked the squad that will play in the Boston University game on Saturday and make the annual Southern trip during Spring vacation.

The men were chosen after yesterday's practice session in the new cage, where the team has been working out because of inclement weather. Nineteen men in all, six of them being pitchers, were retained from the squad of 40. These men, with perhaps a few additions, will compose the University squad for the entire season.

Names Nineteen For Squad

The following men were named by Coach Mitchell:

Pitchers: E. A. Colpak '29, R. R. Ketchum '29, W. H. MacHale '31, E. L. Molloy '29, W. K. Page '31, and Howard Whitmore '29. Catchers: S. L. Batchelder '31, J. D. Dudley '31, and T. W. Gilligan '31.

Infielders: J. J. Carver '30, Captain G. E. Donaghey '29, E. H. McGrath H. F. E. Nugent '29, and J. A. Prior 29. Outfielders: B. H. Bassett '31, R. E. Durkee '29, B. B. Ticknor '31, E. R. Todd '29, and A. G. Whitney '29.

Season Opens Saturday

The team opens its season Saturday, playing B. U. at 3 o'clock on Soldiers Field. At present it seems probable that the infield will be composed of three veterans and a newcomer. McGrath, who captained last year's Freshman nine, broke into the veteran combination of Prior. Nugent and Donaghey and will in all probability be seen at short. Whitney, at present listed with the outfielders, was seen at the hot corner quite frequently last year so there is a possibility of his being shifted to the infield.

Dudley is Probable Choice

Last year the hard-hitting W. W. Lord '28 was a power behind the bat but his graduation left the catching assignment wide open. In the scramble for the job three Sophomores have survived the competition and it is probable that of these Dudley will get the call on Saturday.

The pitching assignment is as yet indefinite. If Whitmore has sufficiently recovered from a sore arm which he developed several weeks ago he will doubtless ascend the mound in Saturday's tilt. Should he be unable to pitch, however, it is a toss-up between the other five who will oppose the Terriers.

Leave For South Sunday

The team will leave Sunday at 1.05 o'clock from South Station for Williamsburg, Va. where it opposes William and Mary on Monday April 8. The remainder of the Southern schedule follows:

April 9--Richmond University at Richmond, Va.

April 10--Quantico Marines at Norfolk, Va.

April 11--Georgetown at Washington, D. C.

April 12--Catholic University at Washington, D. C.

April 13--Columbia at New York.

Besides Coach Mitchell, Manager S. G. Hardy '29, Assistant Manager H. T. Freeman '30, J. C. Fadden, trainer, and another manager yet to be named will make the trip.
