In the opening races of the 150-pound crew season, last Wednesday, two Harvard Shells divided honors with the Kent School, with the second Crimson boat registering in a victory while the first was later defeated. The University heavyweight squad did not practice during vacation: but the Freshmen have been hard at work, and capped their efforts with a race last Saturday.

Today Coach E. J. Brown '96 will name a squad of about two University crews. These will practice as equals in rating till next week. When the first and second boats will be chosen.

The 150-pounds were divided into first and second boats a few days before the start of the recess; their races with the schoolsboys on Wednesday put them to their first test with outside competition. Rowing over a Henley course on the Housatonic, the first shell was nosed out by Kent by one-fifth of a second time. The Harvard men, outweighed some 20 pounds apiece, got off to a good start and at one period held a one-length lead. Approaching the finish line, however. Kent put on a spurt which carried them a foot ahead of their opponents to victory. The time was six minutes 26 seconds.

In the preliminary event the Harvard second 150-pounds scored an easy one-length triumph over the Kent seconds. The winners swept into an early lead which they maintained despite Kent's final spurt. The race was five second slower than the following one.

The Freshman have been rowing twice a day since Wednesday in preparation for a hard season. The three cornered race last Saturday was a walk away for the Red crew, stroked by A. H. Parker '32. The winners gave their two rivals a length's handicap, but ended a full three lengths ahead.
