TO HONOR MEMORY OF A. C. COOLIDGE

A tablet to perpetuate the memory of Professor A. C. Coolilge '87, distinguished scholar, diplomat, and former director of the University Library, who died about a year ago, is to be placed in the Widener Library, it was learned yesterday.

Friends, colleagues, and former pupils have combined to honor the prominent figure in this way. The committee in charge, headed by Professor R. B. Merriman '96 and J. D. Greene '96, in consultation with President Lowell, has been carrying the work quietly forward; already the gifts of some 200 individuals have gone far toward reaching the $6500 goal which has been set.

A telegram from Mr. Green yesterday declared that the tablet is to be in the form of a bas-relief and is to be done by J. A. Coletti '24. The design has not yet been finished, but it is hoped to have the plaque ready for unveiling by Commencement.

Professor Coolidge served Harvard from 1893, when he entered as an instructor in history, till his death in January 1928. He became professor of history in 1908, and a year later director of the library. Previous to his attachment to the University he had been secretary to American legations at St. Petersburg, Paris, and Vienna; he continued his participation in diplomatic circles for many years, and was recognized as an authority on contemporary politics.
