BROWN SEEKS NEW STROKE OARSMAN

Tiller Lines of University Boat Need Trained Hand; Freshmen Take to Shells

With the University crews going out on the river every day for short practice sessions Coach E. J. Brown '96 is rapidly getting a line on his men and beginning to formulate plans for picking his first eight. He will, however, keep the five class crews, which are practising now, intact for several weeks.

The task which confronts Coach Brown at present is that of developing a stroke and a coxswain to take the places of John Watts '28 and C. H. Pforzheimer '28 who graduated last June. While the remainder of the men at present row on the same crew each day the strokes and coxswains are shifted continually in order to try their ability. At present it seems that the leading stroke candidates are R. I. McKesson '31, Stanley Swaim '31, P. H. Watts '31, C. N. Comstock '30, J. S. Wintringham '30, James Lawrence '29, C. McK. Norton '29, R. C. Timpson '31, and P. E. Wilson '30. Lawrence and Norton both were on last year's Junior University crew. Swaim, Watts and McKesson all were members of the Freshman crew last year. Swaim rowed in the stroke position, while Watts and McKesson held down the No. 2 and bow berths respectively.

Five men seem to have the lead at present in the competition for coxswain: E. L.Belisle '31, coxswain on last year's Freshman crew, F. S. Holmes '31, M. T. Nichols '31, Irving Neiman '29, and L. L. Wadsworth '30.

The crews until now have been staging short races, each lasting about two minutes, among themselves. There is a possibility, however, that there will be a longer race today on a straight stretch up the river.

The Freshmen under Coach H. H. Haines, have abandoned the Leviathan and are now rowing in shells. Approximately 15 crews of first year men go out each day from Weld Boat House.
