Coach Horween yesterday departed from his usual custom of scrimmaging against the seconds and pitted Teams A and B of his University squad against each other in a brisk hour's workout.
Most of the details of the scrimmage, held in the enclosed field, were withheld, but the practice was similar to that of Monday. Play was halted often during the informal tilt as the coaches attempted to catch all possible mistakes. Just what kind of plays were tried out is not known but it is probable that forward passing received a great deal of attention in order to perfect the promised overhead offense.
Four members of Team A, including Captain Barrett, were out of the afternoon's work. Barrett and Harper reported with slight bruises, and Putnam and O'Connell were still absent because of divisional examinations. Wetmore reported in civilian clothes but ran through signals nevertheless. All are expected back today for the scrimmage against Coach Knox's seconds.
Today's practice will be the final stiff workout before the men start tapering off for the opening game, only a light drill being on tap for tomorrow and a short signal drill filling the bill on Friday. With the line practically picked only the four backfield positions remain to be filled. Definite announcement of the eleven starting players will be made tomorrow.
Bates will arrive here on Friday morning and will take a short drill on the Stadium turf in the afternoon. That the team from Maine will be no setup is shown by the fact that their forward wall, led by 218-pound Harris Howe, giant tackle, averages 188 pounds. Their backfield however is extremely light, averaging only 155 per man. This is mainly due to the fact that Borstein, diminutive little quarter-back, weighs only 119 pounds.
The lineups today were as follows:
Team A: l. e., Harding, l. t., Lewis, l. g., Trainer, c., B. Ticknor, Cunningham, r. g., W. Ticknor, r. t., Davis, r. e., Douglas, q. b., Wetmore, Mays, l. h., Batchelder, r. h., Mason, f. b., Potter.
Team B: l. e., Burns, l. t., Levin, l. g., Talbot, c., Gildea, r. g. Ginman, Newhardt, r. t., Kuehn, r. e., Ogden, q. b., Wood, l. h., C. Devens, r. h., T. Gilligan, f. b., Huguley.
