Following the example set by Professor Gilbert Murray when he held the Charles Eliot Norton Chair of Poetry in 1926-27, the new professor, Heathcote William Garrod, proposes to hold informal discussion groups for his students in his rooms, 37 Grays Hall, on Thursday afternoons at 5 o'clock, beginning Thursday, October 17.
"I am very anxious that these meetings may be gatherings of an informal nature, with none of the atmosphere of a lecture," said Professor Garrod last night. "I do not want to spend the time delivering a monologue; that will deprive the gatherings of any advantage they might offer for the informal, interesting discussion of subjects which students will, I hope, suggest.
"The first meeting will in some way permit the students to become acquainted with me, and permit me at the same time to learn something about Harvard students as individuals. So far I know only two undergraduates, and I wish to extend the range of my acquaintances considerably. At the initial meeting I will welcome any suggestions as to the range and method of future discussions."
Professor Garrod yesterday announced four public lectures, to be held in the Fogg Large Lecture Room on successive Wednesday evenings, beginning Wednesday, October 23, at 8 o'clock.
