Colleagues, pupils, and friends of John Strong Perry Tatlock, of the Class of 1896, will regret to learn of his resignation from the Faculty of the University. As Chairman of the English department, professor, and author, with a distinguished career behind him and a bright future ahead, he has served Harvard faithfully and well for four years. The Faculty of the University in general, the English Department in particular, can ill afford the departure of so eminent a scholar and educator. While deploring Harvard's unfortunate loss, the University of California must be congratulated on having acquired Professor Tatlock. His absence will be felt here, but being unavoidable it can only be hoped that he will help bridge the gap which, due to geographical considerations, must inevitably separate the University of the West from the University of the East.

Paralleling the announcement of Professor Tatlock's resignation is the statement that Professor John Tucker Murray, of the Class of 1899, has been appointed to fill the vacancy. Ten years as member of the English department and four years as director of the Harvard Summer School indicate a wide and qualifying experience, which augurs well for his incumbency of the English chair.
