HAMLEN RESIGNS POST AS ALUMNI SECRETARY

TO ENTER ADVERTISING BUSINESS IN BOSTON

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Joseph R. Hamlen '04 resigned last night as general secretary of the Harvard Alumni Association in order to enter business in Boston. He will become director for New England of Rudolph Guenther-Russell Law Incorporated, financial advertisers of New York, City. No successor has as yet been chosen.

He will remain, however, as chairman of the Executive Committee of the Harvard Fund Council until another chairman is appointed, and he will also continue as President of the Harvard Alumni Bulletin.

Mr. Hamlen became secretary of the Alumni Association in 1927 and in that capacity has been very successful in bringing together effectively the various interests of the Harvard Alumni body. He was instrumental in establishing the Harvard Fund in 1925 and has been chairman of the executive committee of the Fund Council since that time.

Dean A. C. Hanford Ph. D. '23, and Lawrence Coolidge '27, assistant dean, expressed to the CRIMSON their sorrow at Mr. Hamlen's loss and their appreciation of his work. Mr. Hanford said: "The resignation of Mr. Joseph Hamlen as general secretary of the Alumni Association is a great loss to Harvard University. He has not only taken an enthusiastic interest in the affairs of the college but has had a thorough understanding of its educational policies and work. For this reason he has been especially helpful in his work among the graduates and also in giving advice to those of as here in Cambridge. Fortunately his new position will not take him further than Boston, so that he will still be available for counsel and assistance." Mr. Coolidge said: "The loss of J. R. Hamlen's active service as secretary of the Alumni Association is a great loss to graduates and undergraduates alike. With his wide acquaintance, his keen understanding of academic problems, and his untiring energy and devotion to Harvard, he has made himself indispensable as a link between the past and the present of the University. We all will miss him here and we all wish him equal success in the new engagements he is about to undertake."
