Several minor changes in the lineups of the three teams of the University football squad to the two workouts yesterday indicated the very temporary character of most of the arrangement of candidates in positions during the past week.
In an effort to solve the problem presented by the vacancy left in the center of the forward line by the absence of Dudley Bell '28, star center of last year's eleven. Coach Arnold Horween '21 had R. H. O'Connell '30, former Exeter captain and stellar end of the Freshman team of three years ago, out with the centers practicing passing and blocking. J. H. Gildea '31, Freshman pivot man of last fall, considered to be the leading candidate for the post on the first eleven this season, is still out with a leg injury but is expected back about October 1. B. H. Dorman '29, A. B. Bigelow '30 and B. H. Ticknor '31 have snapped the ball back on the three sections of the University squad this week.
In the morning signal practice yesterday S. L. Batchelder '31 took the place at left halfback of David Guarnaccia '29, who took the day off from active work, but followed the play. The remainder of the Team A backfield was the same as in the scrimmage of the day before, with George Crawford Occ. at quarter, Captain A. E. French '29 at right half, and W. R. Harper '30 at fullback.
The Team A line was filled by F. A. Pickard '29 at left end, J. E. Barrett '30 at left tackle, J. N. Trainer '31 at left guard, and Dorman at center. John Parkinson '29, F. A. Clark '29 and J. G. Douglas '30 took care of the right side of the barrier. The makeup of Team B and C was substantially the same as on Thursday.
Lineups in the afternoon's work were changed with bewildering rapidity, coaches, substitutes and ineligible players filling in the vacancies indiscriminately. Punting and passing occupied much of the time.
Horween is planning a scrimmage for this morning, and no practice for this afternoon. Yesterday was the last day of the double practice sessions. The commencement of classes next Wednesday makes the continuance of this system impossible.
