Seven members of the staff of the Harvard School of Architecture will go abroad this summer for research work in Europe while three are following out work in this country. Two of these men, Professor G. H. Edgell '09, and Professor S. F. Hamblin, have been granted sabbatical leave for the coming academic year, and will continue their work throughout the winter. The research will be widely varied in its aspects, covering Swedish architecture. French water colors, English landscape and domestic architecture, a study of the ruins of the Romanesque monastic group at Cluny, as well as American city planning.
Professor Edgell, dean of the school, will first visit Sweden for a short time to study modernism in Swedish architecture. His subsequent plans are not as yet definite.
Conant Goes To cluny
Assistant Professor K. J. Conant '15 will again go abroad under a Guggenheim Fellowship, to continue his study of the Monastic buildings and church at Cluny. Permission for excavating the ruins is practically assured by the French government, and the expedition is being financially backed by the Medieval Academy of America.
While Professor B. W. Pond '01 is collecting data and photographs of country estates and gardens in England, other members of the department will cover the general field of landscape architecture and city planning. Professor B. V. Hubbard will direct city planning research work in this country under an appropriation from the Milton Fund, and Professor HAMBLIN will devote his time to writing.
Professor J. J. Haffner, and H. B. Warner, instructor in freehand drawing, will go abroad to continue painting, while H. A. Frost '05 instructor in architecture, will be in charge of a students' trip in England in which the study of architecture will be the main interest.
