Construction of Additions to Langdell Hall Will Start Soon

Work on the proposed $ 1,500,000 enlargement of Langdell Hall will begin late this month or early in June, it was announced yesterday. The plans call for additions to Langdell Hall which will make the building approximately three times its present size and will give Harvard University a law school plant without a peer in the world.

The greater facilities will not mean an increase in enrolment, but better conditions for the students to work under. The present enrolment is a little over 1500, and it is estimated that the new plant will accommodate satisfactorily only 1600.

One section of the additions will duplicate the present structure, while in the rear of the building, extending toward Massachusetts avenue there will be a new wing. The architects are Coolidge, Shepley, Bulfinch, and Abbot, of Boston, and the contract calls for the completion of the building before September 1, 1929.

Among the features of the rebuilt Langdell Hall is the reading room, covering the entire second floor of the present edifice and the same floor on the adjoining twin structure. New facilities to make the library more easily accessible to students will be installed, and the capacity of the stacks will be increased to 500 volumes, allowing ample room for future growth. The present library which ranks as the most complete law collection in existence includes approximately 260,000 volumes. A periodical room is also planned.

The new lecture halls and nine seminar rooms will increase the instruction facilities, and the administration officers will move from their present cramped quarters to more ample offices.

An interesting addition is the court room which will be placed in the west wing. It will seat 600 people outside of the bar.
