CRIMSON RELAY MEN TAKE SECOND PLACE

The University relay team returned from the Penn Relays yesterday, a second place winner, after its first official race of the outdoor season Saturday. In these games, held on Franklin Field, Philadelphia, T. H. Alcock '29 placed fourth in the hammer throw.

In the two-mile relay event, the only one, except the hammer throw, entered by the University, the college championship of America went to Bates College, when the Lewiston outfit's last two runners overcame the early Harvard lead to break the tape between 25 and 30 yards ahead of R. P. Porter '28, anchor man.

Captain A. H. O'Neil '28 jumped to a good lead at the gun, and finished his leg of the journey 12 yards ahead of the field. Running a very fast half-mile, he raced down the water-drenched track to hand the baton to F. E. Cummings '30 one minute, 57 and 4-5 seconds after he had started. Cummings held the Harvard lead throughout his run, and relinquished the baton to W. C. Peet '28, five yards in front of his nearest contender, Wardwell of Bates. In the home-stretch of his leg, Peet gave up the pace-making to the Lewiston contingent as Adams slipped past him to hand his captain, Wakely, a seven-yard advant- age over the Harvard anchor man, Porter. In the final rush for the tape, Wakely opened a considerable yardage to cross the finish line well in lead of the field. The University came in second with a 25-yard lead over Ohio State, and Boston College, winner of the college relay championship for the past two years, placed fourth.

Alcock hurled the hammer 138 feet, 8 3-4 inches to take fourth in the hammer throw. First and third places in this event went to Cornell, and second to the University of Pittsburgh.
