RACQUETMEN ENGAGE IN ANNUAL SPRING TOURNEY

COWLES SELECTS SIX FRESHMEN FOR SQUAD

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The annual spring tennis tournament, the winners of which will be added to the University or Freshman tennis squads, will get under way this afternoon. A temporary squad of 15 men has been picked for the University team, and the five men who make the best showing in the tournament will be added to this squad. The winners of the Freshman tournament will likewise be elevated to the 1931 squad.

About 50 men are entered in each of the two tournaments. After the best five players in each tournament have been determined, the remainder may play on their class teams or on the second Freshman team. As soon as the class teams have been picked, a series of matches will be held to determine the class championship, the second Freshman team representing that class in the series. The winners of the tournament which starts today will be picked according to their comparative scores, a decisive victory thus counting more than the result of a close match.

Five Winners to Be Added to Squad

The five men who will be added to the University squad as the result of the tournament will play matches to determine their ranking in the squad as soon as they are chosen. Tomorrow the present squads will begin a series of matches to determine individual positions, although the six men who constitute the first team were picked some time ago, and have been practicing on the Longwood courts during the winter.

A University team is usually picked in the fall from the men who make the best showing in the tournaments of the preceding spring. Thus the winners of the present tournament, while they have but slight chance of making the first team this spring, may advance their standing on the squad during the season.

Matches to Be at Jarvis Field

The tournament will be held on the Jarvis Field courts, the matches which cannot be accommodated there being played off on Divinity Field. The matches will probably be played throughout the week.

Yesterday was the first day of formal outdoor practice for the University team this season. The University courts were open during vacation, but the team played outdoors for the first time at the Pinehurst tournament last Monday, and this week is their first week of practice following the Spring trip.

A Freshman team of six men has been temporarily selected from the present squad. The men chosen by Coach H. L. Cowles are W. L. Breese '31, G. S. Greene '31, A. C. Ingraham '31, Ogden Phipps '31, R. L. Tower '31, and T. G. Upton '31.
