FOOTBALL PLAYERS JOIN HOCKEY SQUAD

Coach Stubbs Will Reduce Force of Skaters to 25 or 30--Call for 1932 Squad to be Issued in Week

The appearance of four members of the football squad, E. T. Putnam '30, S. L. Batchelder '31, R. S. Ogden '31, and Sumner Putnam '31, marked the second practice session of the University hockey squad held in the Boston Garden yesterday afternoon. Coach Stubbs divided the 73 candidates, into two groups, each of which spent about an hour and a half on the ice. No scrimmages have been held yet, but the practice consisted of some fast carrying of the puck by various forward lines, and checking by several different defense groups. Some time was also devoted to practicing shots at the cage which four men took turns in defending.

The first cut of the season will be made next Tuesday afternoon, when the squad will be lowered to 25 or 30 men. This group will be further cut later in the season when the Second team will be formed. Since the days for practice are so limited, Coach Stubbs has arranged for two extra sessions to be held on the next two Saturday afternoons. These periods will be of only about an hour's duration, so the groups must necessarily be small. Those chosen for these days, however, will be in no way indicative of the makeup of the team.

M. I. T. will be the first team to oppose the University sextet, the game taking place in the new Boston Garden next Wednesday evening. The call for Freshman hockey candidates will be issued sometime after the middle of this month. The first year men will have the use of the Garden for practice two afternoons each week, with practice being held on the Soldiers' Field rinks on the alternate days.
