60 HOCKEY CANDIDATES OPEN WINTER SEASON

The hockey season was ushered in yesterday afternoon when 60 candidates reported at the Madison Square Garden rink for the first practice under Coach Joseph Stubbs '20. Included in the squad which is larger than in preceding years were the veterans of the 1927-28 season, headed by Captain John Tudor '29.

In the group were A. S. Bigelow '29, H. W. Bigelow '29, F. R. S. Giddens '30, G. C. Holbrook '30, C. B. Lakin '30, and M. N. Stanley '29 who are expected to form the nucleus of the new sextet. However several star performers on last year's Freshman combination bid fair to furnish stiff competition to the lettermen. Among the most promising from the Class of 1931 are J. B. Garrison '31 and S. L. Batchelder '31.

Squad Divided in Two Groups

For convenience in practice the squad has been arbitrarily divided into two groups. Squad A took the rink first today and spent the allotted time in practising a one man defense against a two-man attack. Then Coach Stubbs had the men line up, race, and reverse at the whistle. Squad B later repeated the same methods.

Coach Stubbs is faced with the problem of getting a team conditioned by December 12 when the opening game of the season with M. I. T. will take place. Since the team will practice only on Tuesdays and Thursdays this leaves only two more pre-game sessions.
