Harvard Housing Trust Authorizes Architects to Construct New Group of Three Buildings

Will Contain Approximately 30 Apartments for Married Students in University

As part of the work of housing married students in the University, the Harvard Housing Trust has just authorized their architects, Kilham, Hopkins, and Greeley to proceed with the final plans for a new group of three buildings, which will contain approximately 30 apartments. The new buildings are being constructed primarily to meet the increased demand by graduate students for smaller apartments.

The plans of the Trust call for a further extension of the Holden group of buildings. The first group was completed a year and a half ago in Shaler Lane, opposite Stillman Infirmary. The new building is to face the entrance of Holden Green, and is to be an architectural feature added to the present group. The building will be divided by party walls into houses and apartments, with not more than six apartments to any one unit.

Each apartment will have a large living room, a bed chamber, a bath and a kitchen, and will be essentially the same as the existing apartments in Shaler Lane and Bolden Green which rent for $39 to $45 a month.

The success of the first year of the plan for housing married students has prompted the new move. An academic year's experience showed that the plan was sound both from the college viewpoint and the financial aspect.

The proposed new building at Holden Green will provide 21 apartments and two houses, giving a total of 134 accommodations.

Although the housing of married students is entirely a private business venture, the Trust has been assisted by the cooperation of the University. Circulars are sent out in May to all listed married students describing the housing in full detail.

Blanks are provided for the students to indicate the kind of housing and the price desired. When all applications are in, apartments are assigned by the Trust in order of choice. If any applications for some reason are unable to be filled, a list of the remaining accommodations is sent to the applicant. In this way last year all but 20 of the students were satisfied.

Although it is still three months before circulations are to be mailed for next year's rentals, a large number of renewal applications have been received from those who are at present in the buildings.

With the assistance of the Deans of all the Schools in the University, the trustees have been able to make a classification of the students who are now living in the married student quarters.
