With the closing of the Harvard Union this month a year of unprecedented activity and varied accomplishments will come to a close. The Union this year has secured for its speaking programs prominent men who were able to talk on subjects of interest to the undergraduates, it has been active in sponsoring and encouraging the use of club tables and has had under its direction the Harvard Debating Union. Besides these it has carried on the usual social and athletic activities of former years.
In the course of the year it has held four large dances: one following the Princeton game, another at Christmas time, a Valentine dance and the Spring dance. Following the seven football games played in Cambridge tea dances were given.
Under its direction the activities of the Debating Union were divided into a spring and fall term during which meetings were held at two week intervals. To some of these meetings outside speakers were invited, but following the debates the floor was always thrown open to the house.
Miscellaneous features were offered as well as the regular events on the Union program throughout the course of the year. Among these was a concert by the Harvard Instrumental Clubs, sports night on which various slow motion pictures were shown and the inauguration of Sunday evening concerts.
Lectures were given during the year by Dr. H. J. Spinden '06, Colonel LaT. Driggs, General Umberto Nobile, Professor H. E. Barnes, Colonel C. W. Furlong, Dr. W. M. McGovern, J. F. Leys, F. M. Ford, Professor S. K. Hornbeck, Captain R. A. Bartlett, W. H. Hays and F. B. Young.
Besides a prize essay contest tournaments in tennis, billiards, pool, squash, bridge and chess were held for members.
