Crimson and Red and Blue will mingle on the diamond for the second time this spring when the University nine steps out today onto the greensward of Franklin Field, Philadelphia, to cross bats with the University of Pennsylvania baseball team. The game will constitute one of the leading events of a gala weekend for the City of Brotherly Love, since today is Alumni Day at the Pennsylvania university, and a crowd numbering about 20,000 is expected to witness the clash of the rival nines.
Pennsylvania is one of the three college teams to take the measure of the Harvard aggregation this season. Georgetown and William and Mary, the other conquerors of Harvard, have each been defeated in turn, leaving the Red and Blue with the Boston Braves, the sole outfit to humble the Crimson un avenged. A victory over Coach Walter Cariss' team today will set the University team in the extreme front rank of eastern college baseballdom.
Barbee and Sanford May Clash
J. N. Barbee '28, premier University moundsman who has scored nine victories in ten starts, will do the hurling honors for Harvard. It is likely that he will be opposed by Foster Sanford, counted formost among college pitchers, who held the Crimson hitters helpless for six frames on Soldiers Field six weeks ago. On that occasion, Harvard rallfed in the closing innings, but was unable to overcome a big lead, and succumbed by 11 to 7. Barbee did not appear in this game.
Walker and Knoblach, the latter a lefthander, are further Pennsylvania pitching possibilities. These two, with Sanford, round out one of the strongest staffs in the east.
The exact lineup of the University nine is uncertain. It is expected that G. E. Donaghy '29 will cover shortstop and that W. P. Elison '27 will roam right field, since this combination offers the strongest hitting attack. In late games especially against southpaws. Donaghy has gone to right and R. C. Sullivan '27 has played short, and a last minute shift by Coach F. G. Mitchell may send this combination into the field
