Frank Shields of Columbia Grammer School, New York City, defeated Henry Johnson of New Preparatory School, Cambridge, by 6-4, 8-6, 3-6, 7-5 in the finals of the thirty-sixth annual Harvard Interscholastic tennis tournament at Divinity Field yesterday. The match was hard-fought from start to finsh, Johnson led in the last get by 5-3, when Shields rallied to take four straight games for the match.
Shields, who is the national boys' champion, won the Pennsylvania Interscholastic tourney last week, while Johnson carried off the crown in the Yale Interscholastics.
Play in the tournament opened last Monday on Jarvis Field, and continued on these courts until yesterday, when the semi-final matches were moved to the Divinity courts. In the semi-finals Shields defeated W. Barry Wood of Milton, 6-0, 6-2, while Johnson overcame Walter Thomas of Andover by 8-10, 6-1, 6-3.
Exeter carried off the team championship honors, with a score of 10 points, with Columbia Grammar, Newton High School, and New Preparatory School tied for second place with 8 Andover trailed with 6. This marks the second successive year that Exeter has won the team title, and that Columbia Grammar has claimed the individual winner. Last year Julius Seligsen took the laurels, after defeating Shields in the semi-final round.
