Shall we return to the time-worn controversy regarding over-emphasis of football in the American college? God for bid that we should ever be allowed to forget it. The Herald notes with a great deal if interest that the University of Miami, age one year, whose Freshman class of 200 attends classes in a hotel lent by a real estate development concern, seeks to obtain a fund of $500,000 to build up a football stadium.
Seriously, this announcement should not be passed by lightly without comment. What is to be the future of a college which would sacrifice scholastic reputation for the sake of possessing a highly equipped athletic plant with up-to date facilities? If there is one such college in the United States, in all probability there are two. If universities are to be founded with the purpose of developing into muscle factories, that purpose should be clearly outlined in the charter, and such an institution should not be allowed to carry the name of university.
Colleges of this type will surely attract large enrollments, composed of men who wish to delay their entrance into the world by playing football for four or more years. If this is to be the case. America will be most truthfully called the land, of the dollar, and its educational institutions will degenerate into the Lyceum school exalted by the ancient Greeks. Brown Daily Herald.
