Following a race in the Basin yesterday afternoon between the first two Freshman crews, Guthrie Willard of New York City was elected captain of the first-year eight.
Willard, who strokes the 1930 oarsmen, prepared at Groton, where he rowed on the crew for two years. During his last year, he was stroke and captain.
Coach H. H. Haines will not pick his first eight until shortly before the initial Freshman race with Pennsylvania and M. I. T. on May 21. Competition for positions in the first boat is very close. So far this season the two crews have been racing several times each week, without either one showing any marked superiority. In this afternoon's encounter over a mile and three quarter course, crew R, stroked by Willard, defeated crew S by three lengths. Beating a stroke of about 33, the newly elected captain took his eight to the fore at the start, gradually increasing the lead throughout the race.
Following is the present seating of the two crews:
Crew R: Stroke, Guthrie Willard, 7, L D. Parker; 6, James Roosevelt; 5, G. P. Hamlin, Jr; 4, Rodgers Donaldson; 3, C. N. Comstock; 2, E. W. Page; bow, J. L. Batchelder, Jr.; coxswain, D. F. Baum.
Crew S: Stroke, M. R. Brownell, Jr.; 7, Malcolm Taylor, Jr.; 6, W. H. Boldt; 5, W. L. Storey; 4, C. E. Mason, Jr.; 3, Marshall Rawle; 2, L. W. Dickey; Bow, J. D. Lewis; coxswain, R. H. Miller.
