The Sophomore class crew won the class championship in a three-cornered race on the Charles, River Basin yesterday afternoon. By defeating the Junior and Senior boats the 1929 oarsmen won the right to face the Yale championship class eight on the Charles a week from Saturday.
In yesterdays race the big Sophomore crew clearly demonstrated its strength. The Junior eight caught the water first and shot a few feet into the lead for the first quarter of a mile. The 1929 shell soon slid, ahead, however, while the Senior boat dropped slowly behind the other two. At the Harvard Bridge the Sophomores led by a length, with the Juniors the same distance ahead of the 1927 crew. Just beyond this point, however, the Sophomores pulled steadily away. The Seniors hung on to the Juniors' redder until the Henley, but then fell back. At the finish the 1929 crew led the Juniors by four lengths, with the 1928 shell three lengths ahead of the Seniors.
The Sophomore crew includes three members of last year's unbeaten Freshman eight, while a fourth member of this crew, G. N. Saun '29, is substituting at present daily in one of the starboard seats. The winning crew was seated as follows: Stroke, B. J. Harrison '29; 7, D. S. Greer '29; 6, H. C. Kroell '29; 5, A. V. Cushman '29; 4, K. D. Robinson '29; 3, E. S. Hamlin '29; 2, E. W. Sexton '29; bow, W. S. Youngman '29, coxswain, Irving Nelman '29.
The Junior crew was composed of: Stroke, R. D. Bolster '28; 7. T. D. Howe '29; 6, J. W. Dunlop '29; 5, F. M. Roberts '28; 4, T. H. Eliot '28; 3, J. G. Buckley '28; 2, Amyas Ames, '28; bow, Frederick Winthrop '28; coxswain, R. W. Herr '28.
The Senior shell was manned by the following: Stroke, J. D. Hall '27; 7, H. C. Pierce '27; 6, J. H. Olmstead '27; 5. E. A. Harper '27; 4, W. K. Rice '27; 3, H. V. S. Ogden '27; 2, J. J. Buckingham '27; bow. W. G. Moody '27; coxswain, E. W. Gross '27.
