SARGENT WILLS $30,000 FOR ARNOLD ARBORETUM

Twenty-thousand dollars has been left to Harvard for the use of the Arnold Arboretum, by the late Professor C. S. Sargent '62. Professor Sargent's will, filed for probately yesterday, establishes a fund which the president and fellows of Harvard are directed to hold, employing the income to purchase books on botany and forestry for the Arboretum library.

The sum of $10,000 also is left to the Harvard Corporation "to be invested and the income thereof to be added to the principal for, and during the term of 100 years from the date of my decease, and at the expiration of said term, the principal sum, together with the accumulated interest, be divided into two equal funds". One of these funds is to be used for the care and maintenance of the Arboretum. The income from the second is to be added to the principal for another 100 years when the income is to be available for the Arboretum. It has been estimated that the funds will amount to something like $100,000,000.

This will of Professor Sargent's was made in 1896 and several codicils have been added. There is no estimate of the value of the estate. C. S. Sargent. Jr., is named executor and trustee.
