BARRAGE FROM RED AND BLUE HITTERS LAYS CRIMSON LOW

Helpless in the early innings before the hurling of Foster Sanford, star Pennsylvania moundsman, the University nine rallied too late to overcome the big lead of the Philadelphians and were toppled by an 11 to 7 score on Soldiers Field yesterday.

Throwing a good fast ball and sharp-breaking drop; the Red and Blue twirler mystified the Crimson hitters during the greater part of the game, and was especially effective with men on bases, when he tricked the batters into offering at bad balls and giving the fielders easy chances which were handled in workmanlike style.

Crimson Bunches Hits

The University team bunched its hits in three innings to tally all its runs, while the visitors picked away at the offerings of F.B. Cutts '28, R.B. Booth '27 and R.R. Ketchum '29 to score 'in six frames. Eight of the visitors' counters crossed the plate with two men out. Two of the three Harvard fielding bobbies were turned to the Red and Blue account in the scoring column.

The winning run was scored with two batsmen retired in the seventh. Captain Tremper of the Visitors walked, and took third on a drive by Becker. Connell got in front of a pitched ball, and Thompson's single scored Tremper and Becker.

Ellison Delivers

Coaoch Mitchell's pupils first broke the scoring ice in the fifth, when they solved Sanford's delivery for three runs. Ullman singled, and moved along when Donaghy was erased at first base. Ellison, hitting for Cutts, drove a sharp hit to right, sending Ullman to the far turn, where he waited while Burns drew a pass. Bennett ran for Ellison, and took third when Ullman scored on Jones' single. Zarakov fouled out, but Lord, who had a perfect day with four hits and a walk in five trips to the rubber, hit viciously to center, and Bennett and Burns registered at the plate.

Error Scores Two

Another brace of Crimson counters came in the seventh, when Burns walked with one out, Jones filed out, and Zarakov singled. Lord walked, and then Armstrong, Penneylvania second sacker, kicked away Tobin's grounder, Zarakov following Burns across the rubber.

The eighth brought the last pair of Harvard runs. Ullman was given a life when Armstrong's throw pulled Cole off the bag, and Donaghy straightened out one of Sanford's shoots for a triple to right. Ketchum and Burns fanned, but Jones weighed in with a single and Donaghy sprinted home.

Double Flay Ends Game

In the ninth, Lord opened the proceedings with a hit, but Armstrong, Thompson and Cole disposed of Lord and Tobin in speedy style, and Chauncey's fly was easy for Thompson.

Behind the pitching of Sanford the Red and Blue nine hit hard and timely to tally 11 runs on 12 hits. Sanford's ability to bear down in the pinches was absent in the work of the Crimson pitchers, who were unable to hold in leash the visitors hits whenever hits meant runs. Captain Tremper of Pennsylvania drove out a home run with two men on the basepaths.

The CRIMSON baseball squad, in preparation for their impending tilt with the Princetonian nine, attended the game as the guests of the H. A. A. and occupied the field boxes in back of first base.
