OARSMEN DEFY ICE IN FIRST WORKOUT

Shells Run Gauntlet of Dangerous Floating Remnants of Winter--150 Pound Crews Launched

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In spite of the stiff breeze and the occasional cakes of ice which still remain in the river, shells were launched yesterday for the first time this year from Newell Boat House by the University oarsmen. Because of the wind, which made the water unusually rough and the going hard, only the first few crews out were taken far. Even so the men were well soaked by he icy water and the heavy clothes which are requisites of the early season proved a wise precaution.

Eight of the men who have thus far been on the A squad were dropped to the class crews yesterday, leaving the first group composed of four boats. These crews are to choose captains some time in the near future, probably next week, and will remain practically intact until the spring vacation with the exception of a frequent alteration of strokes. At that time first and second eights will be picked by Coach Brown.

The A squad as it now stands is as follows:

Crew A: Stroke, J. Watts '28; 7, W. G. Saltonstall '28; 6, F. A. Clark Jr. '29; 5, J. J. Barry '28; 4, B. J. Harrison '29; 3, J. G. Buckley '28; 2, T. H. Eliot '28; now, Frederic Winthrop '28; Coxswain, Ely.

Crew B: Stroke, J. H. Perkins '27; 7, J. deW, Hubbard '29; 6, W. A. Emmett '29; 5, J. R. Harrison '27; 4, H. G. Cushing '28; 3, Oliver Ames ocC.; 2, J. W. Dunlop '28; bow, D. S. Lanier '28; Coxswain, E. W. Gross '27.

Crew C: Stroke, J. A. Hall '27; 7, Elwin Farnham '27; 6, R. W. Ladd '27; 5, J. B. Olmstead '27; 4, E. S. Hamlin '29; 2, James Lawrence '28; bow, George Bancroft; Coxswain, J. H. MacCollom '28.

Crew D: Stroke, C. McK, Norton '29; 7, Guy Murchie '29; 6, J. J. Greenman '27; 5, F. M. Roberts '28; 4, T. S. Sutherland '27; 3, Paul Moffett '28; 2, G. N. Saum '29; bow, H. S. Pierce '27; Coxswain, J. A. Main '28.

The first squad of 150-pound crews has also been made up by Coach Heard and is composed of three eights. These crews were also on the water yesterday.

The 150-pound crews are as follows:

Crew A: Stroke, J. A. Swords '29; 7, A. J. Ostheimer '29; 6, J. F. Lee '29; 4, J. L. Pool '28; 3, P. C. Rutledge '27; 2, W. I. Gregg '28; bow, S. S. Gans '28; Coxswain, Irving Neiman '29.

Crew B: Stroke, T. C. Sturtevant '27; 7, James Hudson '29; 6, John Howe '27; 5, M. L. Bell 29; 4, Morton Cole '29; 3, R. F. Courtney '29; 2, C. A. Stewart '29; bow, E. P. Bayley '28; Coxswain, Carl Pforsheimer '28.

Crew C: Stroke, James De Normandie; 7, E. B. Hanley '27; 6, H. W. Bragdon '28; 5, Maurice Hecksher '28; 4, F. E. Farnsworth '27 3, J. J. Oddoms '29; 2, H. V. S. Ogden '27; bow, Henry Ware '27; Coxswain, F. R. Sullivan 27;

Because of the rough water, which became increasingly so in the latter part of the afternoon, only the first two or three crews out went very far upstream. The later crews were taken downstream and the last crews to appear rowed on the tank instead of taking our shells. Some of the crews encountered groups of floating ice cakes which had to be carefully approached and circumnavigated.

During the rest of the week physical examinations are to be held, for all the crew candidates at Wadsworth House One examination was held before but because of the fact that it was made shortly after the men had rowed on the Bank no satisfactory records could be made.
