Edwin Wide, great Swedish runner at present in the United States, will run in the Harvard Stadium on the afternoon of Saturday, May 7, if the Swedish A. A. U. signifies its approval.
The speedy schoolmaster will attempt to set a new world's record on the Stadium track, which is probably the best in the country. He will designate the distance which he will run at a later date.
Wide is at present the holder of the world record at the outdoor two-mile run, his time being 9 minutes 1 and two-fifths seconds. If he runs here on May 7, he will make the third deliberate assault upon a record in recent years. "Jole" Ray and Paavo Nurmi made gallant attempts to lower the world's mile mark in 1923 and 1925. Both covered the distance in 4 minutes 15 seconds. Since Nurmi returned to his Scandinavian home, Wide has defeated the "Flying Finn". Last night the great Swedish runner failed by 20 seconds to lower the 3000 meter record, in a meet at Portland, Maine.
