The astounding progress being made in the building of the various additions to the University's plant, is well attested to in the accompanying photographs. Never before in a period of the same duration have so many material improvements and additions been made.
Of those structures still going up, the new chemical laboratory, the baseball cage and the Medical School dormitory, are making striking strides. The date of completion of the chemical buildings has not as yet been forecast, but it is expected that the baseball cage will be finished in April while the new Medical School dormitory will be ready for occupancy in the fall.
This dormitory was made possible in large measure by the gift of H. S. Vanderbilt '07. It will be located in Boston, and will accommodate 250 students. It is so designed, however, that should it become desirable in the future, additions may be made which will increase its capacity to 400. There will be, in connection with the building, a large dining room which will seat 250 persons at a time. Work has been progressing steadily all winter, and the building should easily be finished by the autumn.
The baseball cage, on Soldiers Field, close to the looker building, has been in process of construction since in the fall, and will be in use in April. One of the largest of its kind in the country, it is designed to fill a long felt want in connection with Harvard athletics. The present cage has long been too small for the needs of either the track or baseball squads. Particularly in the early spring, when neither group could yet be out of doors, the congestion in the old building was far too great.
With its indoor suspended track and greatly increased floor space, the new cage will not only afford much greater facilities to each of the two sport groups which will make use of it, but will also enable both to practice at the same time if necessary, without interference as at present.
The chemical group, rising on Oxford Street between the New Lecture Hall and the University, however, is the least completed of the new structures. Steam shovels are still at work on Building 'A, which is to be the laboratory, while digging has just begun on Building B; the lecture hall belonging to the plant.
It is expected that the footings will be begun on Building A within a week. It is as yet impossible to estimate when the same stage will be reached in the excavations for the lecture hall.
It is understood that when the new laboratory buildings are completed, a broad avenue, extending roughly east and west, will be laid out on the college grounds. It will begin in front of Austin Hall of the Law School and running between the Jefferson Physical Laboratory on the north and the Music Building on the south, will run to the main entrance of the buildings. As soon as the new laboratory is available for use, Boylston Hall, which has for many years housed the Department of Chemistry, will be turned over to some other department of the University.
