J.F.W. Whitbeck '27, captain of the University team, on Saturday became the first indoor intercollegiate tennis champion. Playing at Cornell, for the William A. Larned trophy, he defeated C.B. Marsh of Williams in a gruelling four-set final match. The scores were 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.
About 40 players from a dozen colleges came to Ithaca to compete, at the invitation of Cornell University, and from this aggregation, Harvard emerged the victor both in the singles and team competition. In the latter, a score of 24 points was sufficient to lead Cornell, Yale, Pennsylvania and Williams in that order.
In the doubles, Captain Whitbeck and L. H. Gordon 27 reached the semifinal round, but there defaulted to Watson and McGlinu of Yale.
In his singles match with Marsh, the University captain, after losing the first set, rallied and through superior court generalship and greater stamina gradually wore his opponent out and captured the remaining three sets of the match.
