THREE DEBATING TRYOUTS HELD IN PAST WEEK

Freshman Speakers Also Take Floor in Smith Halls

Current activity in debating this week was marked by three tryouts held for candidates competing for places on the University Debating team, and by the second meeting of the 1931 debating club held Wednesday night in the Smith Halls Common Room.

The final tryout for positions on the University team which will debate the Boston College speakers, will be held at 4 o'clock today in New Lecture Hall, it was announced last night by E. M. Howe 1L, debating team coach. Any man in the College or Engineering School is eligible for the team. Every candidate will be expected to prepare a five minute speech on the subject: "Resolved, That Al Smith is eminently qualified for the presidency." The following men have been retained: A. L. Roffa, ocC. J. W. P. Lorenzen '28, D. E. Scoll '28, F. M. Shea '29, Norman Winer '29, Saul Rosenweig '29, M. V. Anastos '30, M. U. Copeland '29, and R. F. Courtney '29.

The 1931 speakers on Wednesday night argued the subject: "Resolved, That the Mexican Government was justified in its action toward the Catholic Church" V. M. Harding '31 and S. S. Morrill '31 on the affirmative side of the question, won a decision over H. C. Friend '31 and J. M. Gilmartin '31, who upheld the negative. After the debate an open discussion was held.
