Breaking a traditional policy which has limited Freshman debating contests to one triangular debate with Yale and Princeton in the spring, the Harvard Debating Council is responding to invitations from other colleges for Freshman debates, and will send Freshman teams onto the platform against Boston College, Temple, Tufts, William and Mary, Princeton, and Yale. Coincident with the extension of the Freshman schedule, a 1931 debating club will be formed to train Freshman for the league debates, and an organization meeting will be held in the Smith Halls Common Room Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock.
A. F. Reel '28, president of the Harvard Debating Council, Barrett Williams '28, vice-president, and E. M. Rowe 1L, one of the University debating coaches, will address the first year forensic gathering and four Freshmen will argue the question: "Resolved, That the preparatory school provides better training for life than does the public high school."
W. P. Chapman '31, and H. C. Friend '31, will support the affirmative of this question, while R. B. Cook '31, and G. R. Holden '31, will maintain the negative, and the audience will act as judge.
Other colleges and some preparatory schools have been for a number of years desirous of sending teams against Harvard Freshmen, and this year it was decided to accept five or six of these invitations.
