Students in the University who wish to apply for Rhodes Scholarships and whose homes are in states holding elections this year, must obtain letters of recommendation from President Lowell on or before Saturday, it has just been announced by Professor W. C. Greene '11, secretary of the Massachusetts Selection Committee.
The election of Rhodes Scholars to enter Oxford in the fall of 1928 will take place on December 10, in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire. New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
Appointed Without Examination
Rhodes Scholars are appointed without examination on the basis of their record in school and college; candidates to be eligible must have completed at least their second year in college, be male unmarried citizens of the United States, and between 19 and 25 years of age on October 1, 1928. A candidate may apply either in the state in which he resides or the one in which he has received at least two years of his college education
A Rhodes Scholarship is tenable for three years, and the stipend is now 400 pounds sterling or $2,000 per year. No restriction is placed upon a Rhodes Scholar's choice of studies.
Application blanks may now be obtained at the President's Office, 5 University Hall, and these, together with letters of recommendation, should be in the hands of the state secretaries before October 22.
