Indiana Out to Settle Forever the Supremacy of the West Over the East, Says Graduate--Aim Is to Avenge 1921 Defeat

The following article on football at the University of Indiana was written for the Crimson by B. H. Long, Indiana '26, who is now in his second year at the Harvard Law School.

Down in the hills of Southern Indiana the student body of Indiana University is eagerly looking forward to its first intersectional football game in several years, the clash with Harvard University on Soldiers Field Saturday afternoon, and the chance to bring the scalp of John Harvard back to Bloomington, where you may be sure it has a large and prominent place in the trophy room awaiting it.

While Harvard does not loom as Indiana's strongest opponent this season, after her defeat at the hands of Purdue, Indiana's sister school and traditional rival, the interest in this game will probably eclipse that in any contest of this year's schedule. Indiana is out to settle forever the supremacy of the West over the East, of the Big Ten over the Big Three, or its 1927 equivalent, of co-ed schools over the purely male variety, and in particular, of Indiana over Harvard. In addition a victory will establish their equality with Purdue and avenge the defeat of 1921, when Indiana came to Cambridge and retired on the small end of a 19-0 score. They certainly should need no more incentive.

Under the capable tutelage of "Pat" Page, whose playing and coaching has been entirely among middle-western schools, Indiana has become a strong factor in middle western football, and their team comes to Soldiers Field with the same style of play which has brought success to Purdue. Chicago, and Notre Dame in intersectional clashes this year, and which Harvard has ample cause to respect.

That they are a thousand miles from home will not be indicated by lack of support. In addition to a large following from its own student body, and alumni from all the Big Ten Schools. Indiana brings her famous 98 piece military band, one of the finest in the West, with which she will endeavel to demonstrate her musical, as well as her athletic superiority.
