UNIVERSITY AND 1931 HARRIERS DOWN PURPLE

The cross-country season opened with a double victory for Harvard yesterday; when the Holy Cross harriers were defeated 19 to 38 by the University team, and the Freshmen won 19 to 44. Captain J. L. Reid '29 covered the rainsoaked course in 28 minutes 32 seconds one minute faster than the time of the Holy Cross race last year. G. C. Aldrich '31 took first place for the Freshmen in 18 minutes 28 and two-fifths seconds over the shorter Freshman course.

The times were good, according to Coach Jaakko, Mikkola, considering the condition of the course, which was wet all the way and at some places was standing a foot under water. The University runners took first, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth places, while Captain Fitzpatrick of Holy Cross placed second after a fighting finish.

Leslie Flaksman '29 finished third, with R. G. Luttman '29, J. O. Wildes '29, and G. B. Lee '30 following in the order listed. Beane was the second Crusader to cross the finish line, while Brennan, Steppacher and Gallen accounted for the other Holy Cross tallies.

The Freshmen placed first, second, fourth, fifth and seventh, with Beecham Moore following Aldrich across the finish line, and A. L. Hartridge Jr., Donald Cobb, and P. S. Dalton Jr. scoring the additional points. Madden of Holy Cross was the first Freshman Crusader to cross the finish line, placing third, with Maher. Gatzenmaier and Hegarty following in order to account for the Holy Cross score.
