DIAMOND ASPIRANTS GATHER FEBRUARY 23

Harvard's baseball season will get under way with a meeting of all candidates in the Varsity Club on Wednesday, February 23, according to an announcement by Manager R. A. Magowan '27 yesterday. Although the Crimson will face the stiffest schedule of games ever arranged for a Harvard nine, the men will not be asked to report any earlier than usual.

The plan of inviting all former "H" men in baseball who live in the vicinity of Boston to attend a dinner at the Varsity Club the night the candidates are called out will be repeated again this year. This idea was inaugurated by last year's Harvard manager, Davidson Sommers '26 and was received with much favor by the graduates who are interested in baseball. In addition to the graduate guests, the members of the nine who had won their insignia the previous year were among those who attended the dinner.

Practice for battery candidates will begin the day following the meeting, and for at least a week Coach Mitchell will devote his entire attention to the pitchers and catchers. As soon as the twirlers have loosened their arms up sufficiently, the remaining candidates will be called out, and spend about three weeks or more chiefly in batting practice inside the old cage.

Although the new Harvard baseball cage, designed to be one of the most completely equipped and modern in the country, has been under construction since last October, it will hardly be finished in time for the use of the Crimson ball tossers this spring. This means that the Harvard squad will be forced to endure another season of the indoor work inside the old edifice.

The freshman squad will not be called out until the first or second week in March. Nearly 200 men are included in the University and freshman squads, and the cramped quarters of the old cage are taxed to capacity to accommodate this large group. While the University players are required to report in the early afternoon each day, the Freshmen in the past have been divided into two squads, with the best group reporting three times each week, and the others twice.

At present there has been no appointment made for the freshman coaching position. Claude Davidson has coached the first year for the last four years, and in all probability he will be on the job once more when the season begins. Davidson's appointment was deferred because it was known that he was under consideration for the head coaching job at Brown.
