In its second League Debate this year, which will be held on February 26, the University Debating team will meet the Brown and Wesleyan orators in the first triangular clash of the season. The question for discussion is "Resolved: That this Louse approves the recommendations of President Coolidge in regard to naval construction as contained in his budget message of December 8, 1926'
In that message President Coolidge, in accordance with his program of economy, declared himself an opponent of naval construction. Notwithstanding, a bill was passed in Congress for the construction of a giant dirigible, intended to replace the destroyed "Shenandoah", and for other naval appropriations.
Candidates for the two Harvard teams which will be sent onto the platform will be given preliminary trials on Tuesday evening, February 8, at 6.30 o'clock, in Harvard 6. Freshmen are eligible, it was announced by F. W. P. Lorenzen '28, President of the Debating Council. The trial speeches will be of three minutes' duration, treating either side of the subject. Four speakers and two alternates will be chosen after the trials to represent the University.
Each college has Two Teams
Following the usual procedure in triangular debates, each institution will send two teams to the rostrum, one speaking at home while the other will speak on a foreign platform. In this case, the orators defending the affirmative side of the question will travel. The Crimson will engage the Brown speakers at Cambridge and Wesleyan at Middletown, Connecticut.
