Squash and Swimming have proved to be the most popular sports among Freshmen during the present winter season, according to a statement issued yesterday by C. B. Van Wyck, Secretary to the Department of Physical Education.
139, or about 17 per cent of the class, chose the Squash Courts as their field of activity, while 130 swim regularly at the Big Tree Pool. Winter Crew has attracted 14 per cent of the first year men, and 10 per cent have elected Basketball.
Although they have not displaced the other activities to any large extent, the two innovations of the present season, Handball and Hiking, have proved attractive to a number of first-year men, Many Freshmen who did not choose Hiking as their exercise accompany the walkers or their trips.
Coach Farrell's track squad has drawn about 8 per cent of the whole Freshman class. 55 men have signed up for Hockey. It is interesting to note that although Harvard has no boxing teams, the Freshman leather-pushers outnumber the fencer's or the wrestlers.
