CORNELL AND TECH TRAIL UNIVERSITY CREW IN NAVY WIN

Princeton, Pennsylvania and Navy Lead Lightweights to Finish -- Syracuse First in Junior Race

Philadelphia, Pa., May 31--In the annual American Henley crew races here today. Princeton won the 150-pound division followed by Pennsylvania, Navy and Harvard. In the Junior Varsity race, Syracuse won after a hard fight with the Princeton and Navy boats which finished second and third. The 150-pound winner covered the Henley distance in 7 minutes and 32 seconds, and Syracuse turned in a mark of 7 minutes 16 4-5 seconds.

The University crew, after its encouraging showing in the four-cornered race Saturday, faces two more days of rest before practice is resumed on Thursday.

Next Sunday the entire rowing squad, two University crew, the Freshman crew, and the combination crew, which is yet to be picked, will leave for Red Top. Four weeks of intensive training, for the races with Yale face the Crimson oarsmen and that have earned the brief layoff they are enjoying this week.

The first crew looked better Saturday, than it has for a long time. Holding the Navy crew to a three-and-a-half length margin was a lent performed by no other crew this season, and at the same time Captain Winthrop's eight took ample revenge on M.I.T. for its defeat the week before. The Cornell crew, the surprise of Saturday's regatta, did a good job and forced the Crimson boat to the finish. Harvard as usual rowed a long slow stroke, and locked like a four-mile crew, an encouraging sign with only the Yale race ahead.

1929 Prospects Bright

Coach Haines' big Freshman sweepsters more than lived up to expectations, leaving both the Plebes and the Ithacan 1929 eight far behind. No changes are contemplated in the Freshman boat, which so far this season has kept its prow ahead of all contestants. The 1929 eight will leave for Connecticut next Sunday with prospects for an unstained record very bright, especially as the Yale Freshman crew was beaten three weeks ago by the Pennsylvania 1929 boat, which later trailed Captain Norton's crew.
