That the Debating Union will no longer be an independent organization was announced yesterday after a meeting of the Governing Board of the Harvard Union. At this meeting, the Board voted so approve the recommendation of the Student Committee to make debating a recognized activity of the Union.
Although definite plans for the amalgamation have not been worked out in detail as yet, it is probable that the arrangements will be along the following lines: A new Committee on Debating will be formed by the Union and will act as a sub-committee of the regular Student Committee of the Harvard Union. This new Debating Committee will consist of the members of the present Executive Committee of the Debating Union with the addition of the two Graduate Secretaries and the Vice-President, who are ex-office members of all committees of the Union.
Debates Limited to Union Members
The rules governing the conduct of the debates will not be materially changed next year, although it is probable that, since they will be a Union activity, they will be open only to members of the Union. Is will, however, be possible for the Debating Committee to invite outside speakers to take part on special occasions. Notices of the debates taking place next year will be published in the Union bulletins with the regular Union news.
The affiliation of the Debating Union with the Harvard Union came about because it was felt that in this way members of the Union would be given further opportunity of getting together. In addition, there was the feeling that interest in debating in the University would be stimulated by the new arrangement.
