J. R. Hamlen '04, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Harvard Fund Council, left yesterday for the Middle and Far West, where he will visit various Harvard Clubs in the interest of the recently established Harvard Fund.
Mr. Hamlen will arrive in St. Louis today, where he will speak at a luncheon of the Harvard Club in that city. During his trip he will speak at the Harvard Clubs of most of the large cities of the West, including Minneapolis, Seattle, San Francisco, and Chicago.
Was Secretary to Eliot Wadsworth
Last summer Mr. Hamlen, who since 1917 had been secretary to Eliot Wadsworth then Acting Chairman of the Executive Committee of the American Red Cross, was appointed Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Harvard Fund Council.
The Harvard Fund, of which he is in charge, is a permanent institution which was organized with the intention of providing a means by which every living Harvard graduate would be able to make some contribution to the support of the University. The money which is collected in this way will be given over to the President and the Fellows of the University for unrestricted use for whatever purpose seems necessary. It has long been felt in the University that there are many matters which are not covered by specific grants and that by means of the Fund, resources will be available adequately to take care of these departments.
