While Yale, Princeton, Pennsylvania, and Navy crews have all been working out regularly in open water during the past week, Harvard's oarsmen are still hard at work in the tank and on the machines with no immediate prospect of getting out on the Charles. The ice in the vicinity of Newton boathouse is still several inches thick, and it is a conservative estimate that the Crimson will not be on the river for another week.
While progress is necessarily handicapped by this enforced indoor work, Coach Stevens believes that his eights are fairly well along, and that once the ice is out the crews will develop fast. There are comparatively few Sophomores on the University squad this year, and this means that most of the candidates have had at least one season under Coach Stevens. Five of the eight men who rowed against Yale last year are rowing regularly in the first eight, and two of the remaining three were members of the Junior University crew last year. The only Sophomore to break into the University line-up thus far has been John Watts '28, captain and stroke of the 1928 Freshman eight. For the past week Watts has been stroking the University combination, replacing Captain John Winthrop '26, who moved back to the number six position.
One of last year's Junior University oarsmen to break into the first string combination this spring is F. L. Barton '26, who has been placed at the number 7 seat. For two years Barton has rowed on the Second crew, but this is his first appearance in the University line-up. He has showed up very well in the indoor work, and a duplication of this performance when the crews get on the river may solve probably the most difficult problem confronting Coach Stevens this season.
Captain Winthrop has been at sea 6, while the four places behind the Crimson leader are filled by veterans from last year's University eight. Geoffrey Platt '27 is at seat 5, John Hubbard '26 at 4, Kent Leavitt '26 at 3, while C. F. Darlington '26 is at number 2. The bow position has been held by J. R. Barry '27, who rowed all fall in the University eight at this seat.
This line-up of the veterans represents a considerable change from the positions the same men rowed last spring. Leavitt rowed at number 7 last season, Hubbard at 6, while Darlington held down the number 4 seat. Platt is the only member of last year's shell to row in the same position this year.
