The University hockey team white-washed Yale on Saturday in New York before 10,000 spectators, thereby establishing its superiority on the ice over its two Big Three rivals. The score on Saturday was 2-0, which together with a 4-0 win two weeks ago, gives Harvard a clean slate in the Eli series for this year.
Lack of Practice Hampers Eli
Yale still showed lack of practice, a handicap the Blue has been laboring under all winter due to lack of an artificial risk and the unreliability of natural ice in the vicinity of New Haven. Only at times did their combination play become dangerous, and their wild shooting rendered futile several dangerous advances into Crimson territory.
Nevertheless enough of their shots were accurate to give Captain Cumings in the Harvard net plenty of opportunity to display his skill. It was the Crimson leader's last intercollegiate appearance on the ice, and it was largely due to him that the Cambridge rigging did not become fouled under Yale's insistent attack, which reached its height in the scoreless second stanza.
Second Period Proves Scoreless
The Crimson scores came at the beginning and very end of the game; during the intervening time, the rival defenses were more than equal to the pressure that the forward lines could apply.
No scoring resulted during the first period while the skating trio of Chase, Gross, and Hamlen were on the ice. With the period almost half gone, Coach Bigelow relieved the forwards and the aggressive spares soon counted when Zarakov converted Harding's pass into the first score.
Yale Attack Strong in Second
The second stanza found Yale carrying an aggressive attack into the Crimson zone and on several opportunities, Potts, Cottle, and Frey narrowly missed scores. Zarakov, Scott, and Harding occasionally relieved the siege by sorties down the ice, and towards the end of the period the play grew both faster and rougher, Harding drawing the only penalty of the game shortly before the close of the period.
Yale continued to threaten in the closing session and Frey and Ferguson, the bespectacled Eli center, staged some team play that kept Cumings constantly busy. With only two minutes left to play, Yale sent five men down the ice and the Crimson net guardian was subjected to a shower of shots from all angles. With the timekeeper's eyes glued on his watch, Pratt picked off one of the Eli rebounds and skated the length of the rink to sink Harvard's second tally, 40 seconds before the official end of the hockey season. The summary follows: Score, Harvard 2, Yale 0. Goals Zarakov, Pratt, Penalties, Harding. Time, three 20-minute periods. Referees, Synnott and Foote.
