The first Harvard Yale game was played at New Haven on November 13, 1875, under Rugby rules with a Rugby ball. Owing to the comparative newness of the rules to the Elis the Crimson players completely out classed their opponents winning by four field goals and four touchdowns to nothing. In these days before the adoption of numerical scoring four touchdowns counted as one goal, which accounts for the Yale victory in 1876 portion.
The 1876 game started Yale on her series of wins broken only occasionally by a Harvard triumph that extended to 1908, when the late P. D. Hughton '99 took charge of Harvard football destinies. That year V. D. Kinnard '09 delivered the field goal that gave the Crimson the laurels. A defeat came the next year and two scoreless ties followed before the great Haughton system got fairly started on its conquering march that lasted with one half to 1923.
The scores of past Harvard Yale games follows: Games won by Harvard 13 by Yale 25. Games tied 6.
