SOPHOMORES BEST HIGH SCHOOL TEAM

But 1929 Twice Carries Ball Over Goal Line--Boston Latin Converts Blocked Punt Into Touchdown

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The class football players had their first-taste of real action yesterday afternoon when the Sophomore squad scrimmaged for almost an hour against two Boston Latin elevens. Although the scrimmage was carried on in informal manner with frequent breaks in the play, the Sophomores had a decided advantage over their schoolboy rivals throughout the workout.

No Score Recorded

Two complete teams of Sophomores, with frequent substitutions in their ranks, faced the scoholboys.

This is in line with the new plans in regard to class football, namely, that or giving every man as much actual play as possible, with a view to providing the opportunity of gaining useful experience.

The character of the scrimmage minimizes the importance of the score, and none was kept, but the 1929 team pushed over two touchdowns, while Boston Latin blocked a kick for a touchdown late in the game.

These figures might have been different if the scrimmaging had been conducted in a more formal manner. But the ball was frequently taken from one team and given to the other at critical points in the play, and the whole spirit of the scrimmage was more that of a practice workout, than of a real game.

Sophomores in Long Advance

Team A of the 1929 squad was the first to take the field against the visitors. G. H. Norris '29, kicked off, and the ball was returned to the 32 yard line. Failing to gain, Boston Latin kicked. The punt was run back to midfield, and the Sophomores started a sustained offensive with slanting plays off-tackle alternating with rushes through guard and centre that took them to the 2 yard line. Prominent in this advance was a 20 yard run by W. H. Brine '29, Sophomore halfback.

Standing on their 2 yard line, the schoolboys held for two plays, but the Sophomores were not to be denied, and the ball went over for the touchdown. Brine kicked the goal, and the score was 7 to o scarcely a minute after the start of the scrimmage.

Team B Replaces Starters

After the first 15-minute quarter, Team B of the Sophomores went in, and displayed the same effectiveness as its predecessor. Within five minutes of going on the field P. H. Weymouth '29, after a series of brilliant slants off tackle, carried the ball over Boston's goal-line, No try for point was made, and there was no further score while Team B was on the field.

1929 again kicked off, and the ball went back and forth for some time. Boston Latin was unable to gain consistently, and kicked often.

In the second half, Team A once more and battle, and once more proved their superiority by outrushing their opponents by a wide margin, although they did not score. Late in the period the visitors blocked a 1929 punt, retrived the lose ball, and scored touchdown.

Throughout the scrimmage, the Sophomore squad showed strength. The line-play was aggressive, and had the Boston boys on the defensive most of the time. The backs picked their holes well, and displayed real ability in broken field running.

Wheeler, G. H. Norris, A. R. Swezey, L. M. Shapiro, W. L. Brookfield, and D. R. Kroell played on the Team A line, with J. H. Morris calling the signals, and E. W. Sexton, W. H. Brine Jr. and J. H. Whiting carrying the ball. The B. squad line had H. Lewis 3rd, W. S. Tower Jr., T. F. Kane, W. A. McCausland, R. F. Stevens, R. Reinhart and D. R. Fuller, with R. F. Mahatly and J. B. Fyffe 3rd, as substitutes. H. B. Sawyer, P. D. Weymouth, B. F. Bell, and G. A. Weller were behind the line.
