HORSEMEN UNDERGO HARD EARLY SEASON PRACTICE

PINKERTON IS CAPTAIN FOR THIRD SUCCESSIVE YEAR

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

With the first polo meet scheduled for the first part of January a squad of 22 riders is busy practicing three times a week under the direction of Major Wogan of the Military Science Department in preparation for the hard schedule which has been arranged for the Crimson horsemen.

Three members of the outdoor four which came through to the intercollegiate tourney at Rye last June are back in college and with a wealth of veteran material reporting for all positions the Crimson is looking forward to a season at least as successful as that of last Spring.

Pinkerton Is Captain Again

Captain R. A. Pinkerton '27 is easily the outstanding player on the team. He is considered one of the best riders in college ranks and will be at his old position at back. This is the third year that Pinkerton has captained the polo combination. Two seasons ago he led the University outfit to an intercollegiate championship, and last spring he piloted the Crimson riders to second place.

Alexander Shaw '28, K. J. White '27, and R. B. Burnett '28 are the other veterans who are counted upon to ride for the first team next spring. In the last contest with Yale, the University was handicapped by the loss of White, who was ineligible to play because of scholastic difficulties.

A gift of ten ponies two years ago by Mr. Alan Pinkerton, father of the present captain of the team, forms the nucleus of the stable available for conducting the sport, but even with the further contribution of ponies by the Military Science Department the demand for mounts far exceeds the supply.

The first matches played by the Crimson will be a series with five other local organizations, the matches to be played in the Commonwealth Armory. Starting shortly after the Christmas recess the Harvard riders will meet in succession the Essex Club, the 101st Artillery, the 110th Cavalry officers, the 110th Cavalry enlisted men, and the Lancers. The Freshman team may also be entered in these local matches and although they will be much less experienced than their opponents they will get some valuable training from their older adversaries. Later in the year will come the meets with Princeton and Yale and finally the Intercollegiate Tournament in June.
