The first bootlegger on record to have carried his waree into the precincts of the University Yard police was given speedy justice when arrested on Monday night by John S. Connolly, a member of the University police force. He was arraigned on Tuesday morning before a magistrate in the East Cambridge District Court, charges were preferred against him, and he was fined $20.
In a statement made by Mr. Connolly yesterday, references were made to a vigorous effort now being exerted by the Yard police to curtail the canvassing of college dormitories by bootleggers.
"We are at last getting the situation under control," said Mr. Connolly, "something we have been trying to accomplish ever since prohibition was supposed to come into force. Great difficulty has been encountered in stopping the sale of liquor outside of the Yard, but this arrest will prove a lesson to other bootleggers, and we can now proceed toward wiping out the practice throughout the college dormitories. We are watching other suspicious individuals, and more arrests will follow unless liquor venders take warning, and realize the futility of soliciting business about Harvard.
