UNIVERSITY QUINTET DEFEATS TECH 29-23

Score Stands at 26-24 With Two Minutes to Go When Captain Smith Scores Three Quick Points

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University quintet defeated M. I. T. 29-23 in the second tilt of the season in Hemenway Gymnasium last night.

The Tech outfit was not highly rated before the game, but displayed a versatile passing game, which proved deceptive to the home five at times. Forrester, their captain and center, scored nearly half the points made by his team.

The University drew away to an early lead during the opening minutes of the game. The two teams passed the ball among themselves, and little shooting was done, so the game was sluggish at the start. After the Crimson combination had scored nine points to the opponents' five, Tech made a spurt and drew up even before the first time out was called.

After the short interval of rest the University men seemed to have gained vigor, and jumped to an impressive lead of 17-9 before the half ended.

Last Half Full of Thrills

M. I. T. had not been following up their shots, but a marked improvement was shown when they started the second half. Seven points were scored immediately before the University men realized it, and it was apparent that the last half of the game was to be full of thrills.

With the score 17-16 Captain Smith's team took affairs in their own hands and managed to get a more decisive lead when Barbee dropped two shots from fouls through the strings.

Both Captain Smith and Forrester excelled in shots on fouls, both scoring four times in this manner. Captain Smith did some tricky dribbling, going through the Tech defense several times, though he was unable to score in this way. Numerous fouls were chalked up against both teams, although the play was not rough.

Coombs Falls to Report

Aggressiveness was displayed by both teams in the closing minutes, the Crimson endeavoring to retain the slight margin which it enjoyed, and M. I. T. struggling vainly to overcome the lead.

Coombs, who started the Dartmouth game, was substituted for Barbee, but failed to report to the referee. Tech picked up a point by this mistake.

Excitement ran high, when, with the score standing 26-23 in favor of the University, and only two minutes more of play, Captain Smith caged the sphere once from the floor, and followed up with a perfect goal from fouls.

An improvement was shown in the all-around play of Rauh, University center, who scored four goals from the floor, and teamed up well with Leekley and Smith in rushes for the Tech basket.

Preparation for the Holy Cross game Saturday night will be Coach Wachter's program for the remainder of the week.
